A few weeks before gaming started I decided to use Trouble, my dad's mare that I rode for my last year of OHSET for this season.  We have since been to two playdays and I think we are going to get things down.

Last weekend was Turner gaming, Trouble and I did alright, I also ran Jessica through Jackpot barrels and did great! See our run here: http://s32.photobucket.com/albums/d33/horsepoweredhickchick/?action=view¤t=008.flv

Update on Sister

Well, a couple days ago I set up some barrels and poles and try out Sister. I found out...she doesn't really know how to turn or direct rein much. But she is great with leads and has some natural ability. I also set up a jump and that might be something that we will look into.

Deciding to try someone new

Well, after working with Thunder for 90 days I came to the decision that she may not be right for barrels, or for me taking her through barrels. She will still be with us, she will stay at my dad's and has done a lot more things now including a little gun training.

A while back my dad was given a wonderful little cutting bred mare, and has said that I can try her on barrels. So far we have just done some fun, outside riding, but she is very promising. Coming next month I plan to take her to a playday and take her for the summer, just to see how she will do and have fun. Hopefully next season she can be running at 4Ds. She is very very speedy and has a great stop. Her conformation and attitude is perfect and we seem to click. I can't wait to get her running!

Look for her on the "My Girls" page and I will stay updated!

Good news for Thunder!

In the beginning of January, Thunder found herself in a new barn for some more training to get ready for gaming in March. This week she decided that going fast isn't too bad, and we are able to walk, trot and lope without much trouble at all! Today she saw the barrel pattern for the first time and did pretty well! By March I expect that we will be loping the patterns and possibly adding some speed to barrels and maybe other patterns as well.

New items for Jessica!

I am so excited, though my girls are still out to pasture, I have been able to purchase a couple things for Jessica! I recieved an in-store credit for being a club member at my local tack store (Double H is the best!) and purchased some Dy no turn bells by classic equine in light pink for her! Now Thunder will have to use her old ones until I get her some of her own, but they will both have a pair. Also, I recieved a $25 gift certificate for Smith Brothers and have purchased a light pink saddle blanket to dress her up a bit! It is a mayatex and should fit under her saddle well. Hopefully after Christmas I will have more items to share smile

On a sad note, I am having to do more school work as I did not pass my final the first time, so my girls may be on vacation for a little while longer, but I am trying to get them back into a barn and back into training!

First Blog...First 30 days on Thunder and what to expect.

Hello Everyone! I have decided I need to start a blog to share my day-to-day training and racing experiences. Currently, both my horses are out to pasture, taking some time off while I finish school.

It was decided that Jessica, needed some time off. The 2008 season was the longest she had gone without being able to run with her herd and not have to work everyday.

While I gave the barn I was boarding at 30 days notice, I brough in Thunder to work for a month so Jessica could get out there and have horse time. Before those 30 days, Thunder had never lived in a stall, I don't think she had ever been riddin in an arena, and I had only ridden her a few times. She was, however, a great trail horse already. She did great right away in her stall, never got nervous or started pawing, cribbing, etc. Our first ride, we could not even make it around the arena. We worked on giving to the bit, moving off leg, and let me tell you...she has a killer stop! I don't know where it came from, but from the first day, as soon as you sit back, she hit the breaks. That took some getting used to, but is very nice. She was a lazy horse, but next time we go back to training, she will get put on a higher energy feed.

For the 2009 season, Jessica will not be entering many playdays. She will be going to participate in the Jackpot races and keep Thunder company. We also will be attending 4D races in the area and possibly a couple rodeos for fun. Thunder will be participating in playdays all summer, and will be entering in 4D races as soon as she has the ability to keep up with the other horses. Looking ahead to the 2010 season, I hope that Jessica will still be entering 4D races, I may find another girl to ride her part time. Thunder will be running in 4D races, or rodeos depending on her skill level at that time. I am sure I will still attend some playdays as I just have so much fun!

As far as my blog goes, I will try to update when things happen. I hope to make once a week updates with any training methods that have worked and results of races.
